Minnesota's Cumulative Impacts Law: Rulemaking

In the 2023 Minnesota legislative session, we saw the passage of an important environmental justice law; the cumulative impacts law. This law is currently entering into the rulemaking process, where the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency will clarify details of how the law will work in effect. This will be an incredibly important process to engage with, as weak rules could effectively undermine any power this law could hold.

Combatting the Lead Problem in Minnesota

Clean Water Action Minnesota is working to advocate for funding and programs to improve lead remediation efforts at all levels. This includes education, advocacy, and community powerbuilding. Minnesota 2023 PFAS Prevention Package: Amara's Law

In 2023, Minnesota passed the strongest PFAS prevention legislation in the country. The legislation was named Amara's Law after Amara Strande, a young woman who grew up in an area contaminated by PFAS and diagnosed with an exceedingly rare form of cancer. Amara advocated and testified in support of the bills banning all non-essential use of PFAS chemicals, requiring manufacturers who are selling products in Minnesota to disclose if PFAS chemicals are present, and to close a loophole in the 2019 bill that ended the use of PFAS in firefighting foam.

Too often that means fighting to hold polluters accountable for cleaning up their mess, but we know that ultimately, the best way to fight pollution is to prevent it at the source. The more pollution we prevent, the less we have to clean up.
