Victory: Montgomery County cancels the M83 highway!
After decades of diligent advocacy, community members in Montgomery County have finally deleted a proposed new highway from the County’s Master Plan of Highways and Transitways!
The proposed highway in question was the M-83, the Mid-County Highway Extended, which was a six-mile, planned-but-unbuilt, six-lane highway with a $1.37 billion price tag. It would have cut through park land and drinking water sources; damaging water quality, increasing greenhouse gas emissions, and spending enormous financial resources that could go toward public transit instead.

W.R. Grace moves forward with chemical recycling - but community pushes back
In Howard County, the Cedar Creek community’s fight to prevent W.R. Grace and Co. from constructing a pilot chemical recycling project 230 feet from neighbors’ homes has seen two major developments.
The bad: on June 19th the Maryland Department of the Environment approved Grace’s air permit to construct their facility. Each year we collaborate with our reuse partners to highlight our work reducing single use plastic foodware from our waste streams. Why? Well, we know that 50% of all plastic ever produced has been manufactured since 2000. We also know that plastic contains forever chemicals that are known to cause health problems in humans.
Solar Siting in Montgomery County: Testimony ZTA 20-01
UPDATE: The County Council is poised to vote on ZTA 20-01, and the most important of our concerns have still gone unresolved. Send a message to your Council representatives today: they must fix ZTA 20-01 to protect renting farmers and the Agricultural Reserve as a whole.
