Excited about taxes? I didn’t think so. Even though the environmental investments made possible by the taxes we pay often generate very powerful returns: Clean Water. Jobs. Health Benefits. Many environmental and health protections save and generate more money in the long run than they cost. Still, nobody wants to pay more than they need to.

Here are 4 tips YOU can use to make your clean water giving smarter, more efficient and more impactful. They could even help you save on your taxes!

  1. Give stock. Save cash. Of course, we welcome gifts of cash (by check, credit/debit card, PayPal or e-check) and our members do give generously this way. But if you own stock that is worth more today than it was a few years ago, you should consider donating stock. Donate stock, and your gift powers our clean water campaigning. There is no capital gains tax paid – by you or by us – when we sell your donated shares of stock or mutual funds. Donate those shares to Clean Water Fund, and you can realize charitable tax-deduction benefits, too. Learn more.
  2. Tap your IRA’s power to help protect our water. Anyone age 70 ½ or older who has an Individual Retirement Account (IRA), can give to Clean Water Fund direct from their account without paying taxes on that withdrawal. If you’re already required to start taking money from your IRA (Required Minimum Distributions, or RMDs) why not enjoy that tax advantages of donating directly to Clean Water Fund. Learn how this works.
  3. Got Crypto? Clean Water Fund is now able to accept donations of Bitcoin and many other types of cryptocurrency. If you are someone who invested in Crypto a few years ago, now could be a great time to make a gift and use the tax savings to help you access more of your gains. Get started here.
  4. Clean Water Action AND Clean Water Fund (you can support both!). Gifts to Clean Water Action, a 501-c-4 nonprofit, give us powerful tools for shaping policy and holding politicians accountable, but they are not tax deductible. Gifts to Clean Water Fund, a 501-c-3 nonprofit, support other clean water programs and qualify as charitable tax deductions for people who file itemized tax returns. Many companies will match their employees’ donations to Clean Water Fund. You can donate to both organizations, and many of our strongest supporters do.

We welcome your financial support, whatever form(s) it may take. Know that you are making a difference for our water, now and for the future. Let us know how we can assist you with your Clean Water gift-giving. Be sure to consult an independent tax or legal professional for objective advice on the tax advantages of different giving options.
