This year, we’re celebrating Clean Water Action’s 50th birthday and the 50th anniversary of the Clean Water Act - our nation’s bedrock environmental law passed in 1972 with the help of our founder David Zwick. This law ensures that our rivers, streams, lakes and other surface waters are protected.

I am SO EXCITED to meet you! Wait, don’t run away! I’m not dangerous! I want to talk to you about something that IS dangerous: toxic PFAS in my humans’ clothes!
My humans take me on lots of adventures! We go on hikes, camping trips, and beach walks together. They don’t like to get wet, so they have jackets and boots to keep them dry that they bought at their local REI store. (One time, they tried to make *me* wear a jacket and boots too. I nearly died!! Using Water Pollution Permits to Keep PFAS out of Drinking Water
Last week EPA issued a memo detailing how the agency will use its water pollution permitting program to limit discharges of PFAS to rivers, streams, lakes, and other water bodies. As we’ve written before on our blog, the Clean Water Act has many tools that can be used to keep these toxic fluorinated “forever chemicals” out of our water. Benefits include shifting the burden away from drinking water systems and communities to clean-up PFAS and back on to the industries that financially benefit from using these chemicals. This memo is a welcome step, but more urgent action is needed.
REI Members to REI: Take Leadership on PFAS!
REI has tarnished its reputation as a company committed to sustainability by continuing to sell clothing, including for children, that contains PFAS. As an REI member, I am disheartened to see that not only do many REI products contain PFAS, but REI is failing to make meaningful progress to phase them out. REI recently earned an “F” grade for its PFAS phase-out policies.
