Plastic Bags’ Days are Numbered in Pennsylvania
July 1, 2021 was a milestone date in Pennsylvania - one that put pollution from plastic bags on notice. It marked the expiration of a statewide preemption that delayed implementation of any current policies to limit or ban single-use plastic bags. The legislature first tried to limit local plastic bag bans in 2017 through a standalone bill, which Gov. Tom Wolf vetoed. My name is Erin Dracup and I’ve spent the summer as a field canvasser for Clean Water Action working on the campaigns to ban toxic PFAS in Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I grew up in Ithaca, NY and currently live in Boston where I attend Boston University and study Health Sciences with the intent of pursuing a Masters in Public Health. I’m most passionate about plastic pollution as well as how low-income communities and communities of color are disproportionately impacted by water quality issues.
