Save Our Forests in Maryland
Maryland is losing forests to development daily, but forests serve an important role in our ecosystem, and we cannot afford to lose them.
Forests have more value than just how their proximity increases property values. They're not just nice to look at; we cannot afford to chop down and fragment our remaining forests in an endless pursuit of new development. When we remove forests for houses and pavement, we create more problems with flooding, pollution, and climate change.

The Human Right to Water, passed by the legislature in 2012 and signed by Governor Brown, was a great policy idea with almost no teeth. Community members and advocates worked for years to gain recognition for water as a human right, with our first bill, AB 1242 (Ruskin, 2009) vetoed by then-Governor Schwarzenegger and its successor, AB 685 (Eng, 2012) taking the full 2-year session to pass. Our research has found this program to be inadequate in protecting groundwater, relying on outdated rules, and insufficient data collection and staffing levels to ensure safety.
