Michiganders Now Have an Opportunity to Rein In Pay-to-Play Politics and Out-of-Control Spending in Lansing
LANSING, MI – Today, Friday, July 24, 2026, following the Michigan Board of State Canvassers’ 3-1 vote that the Michiganders for Money Out of Politics proposal has a sufficient number of signatures, Christy McGillivray, Co-Chair, Michiganders for Money Out of Politics Steering Committee, released the following statement:
"Today’s vote is a momentous victory for Michiganders who are fed up with what has become the norm – corrupt, pay-to-play politics. After nearly a year of tireless organizing by volunteers and supporters, voters are one major step closer to making their voices heard at the ballot box to rein in out-of-control corrupt spending by big corporations and state-regulated utilities. Today is proof that a people-powered movement can stand up to some of the most powerful special interests in Michigan.
"Now we must continue to mobilize across the state because our opposition, backed by billion-dollar corporations, is going to do anything they can to stop us from holding them accountable and changing the way our politics work in Lansing.”

The Michiganders for Money Out of Politics (MMOP) campaign is a citizen-led ballot initiative that would ban political contributions from regulated monopoly utilities, such as DTE and Consumers Energy, as well as corporations that seek or hold large state and local government contracts like Blue Cross Blue Shield. The initiative would also close the dark money “issue ad loophole” and modernize Michigan’s campaign finance disclosure requirements.
