A Resolution Supporting
SAFER CONSUMER PRODUCTS
WHEREAS, of the over 80,000 chemicals in commerce only 200 of these chemicals have been tested for their effect on human health or the environment; and
WHEREAS, toxic chemicals such as flame retardants, BPA, formaldehyde and others continue to be found in consumer products, posing a risk to public health and water quality; and
WHEREAS, The Minnesota Department of Health has identified thirty commonly detected chemicals in our groundwater alone such as, pesticides, vinyl chloride, plasticizers and others; and
WHEREAS, promoting and providing incentives for the research and development of safe chemicals and consumer goods will place Minnesota at the cutting edge of emerging global markets and create jobs in a growing sector in our economy; and
WHEREAS, in the absence of strong federal protections, Minnesota has been a leader on protecting public health from toxic chemicals by enacting laws that address toxic chemicals in consumer products.
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED, that the _____________ party supports prioritizing further development of integrated policies that protect public health and water resources from toxic chemicals by:
- Taking prompt action to remove the most dangerous chemicals from consumer products.
- Providing consumers with information by requiring the disclosure of chemicals used in products.
- Promoting the use of safer chemicals in the design and manufacture of consumer products.
