Clean Water harnesses grassroots power by engaging and mobilizing supporters to become active Clean Water Voters by participating in local, state, and national elections and by taking action to protect voting rights and our democracy.

What this means in practice is...

Voting Rights

  • Fight back against voter intimidation

Guide the community in the caucus and convention process

  • Reject voter ID and other forms of poll taxes

Election Outreach

  • Guide our members in understanding the electoral process and what is on their ballot
  • Use our field and phone canvass teams to engage in direct voter contact – both persuasion and GOTV

Legislative Advocacy

  • Directly lobby decision makers at all levels of government

Environmental Justice

  • Raise historically marginalized voices
  • Continually develop and grow Environmental Justice within our organization

Labor Unions

  • Align with labor voices in support of our agenda for economic, racial and environmental justice in elections

Other Direct Actions

  • Non-violent actions including marches and peaceful protests

In Minnesota, Democracy Work means that we are present in all conversations related to the health, safety, and human rights of Minnesotans regardless of how they identify, their status, or how they worship. We work to ensure that every Minnesotan who is eligible to vote is able to safely do so.

We do this by conducting a robust endorsement process for local, state, and federal candidates. We only endorse candidates that share our values and support the work that we do. We hold elected officials accountable for the work they do, the actions they take, and the votes they make.

We prioritize justice by elevating historically marginalized voices and centering those long excluded from the democratic process. We recognize that a legacy of exclusion and targeting has shaped systems and cultures that harm both our environment and our communities.

People fuel all that we do. We train community members to be advocates – for the water, for democracy, and for each other. We work with coalition partners to center community agendas and direct actions we can all take to build a brighter, safer, more just future together.
