One of the biggest wins for clean water in Minnesota is now taking effect: Amara's Law, our state's PFAS pollution prevention law. This is the strongest law in the nation to address PFAS in consumer items.
Named for Amara Strande, a young Minnesotan who was exposed to PFAS-contaminated water, this law tackles toxic "forever chemicals" at the source instead of leaving cleanup to taxpayers later.
- Since January 2025, most products in 11 categories sold in Minnesota must be made without intentionally-added PFAS.
- Starting in 2026, manufacturers must report any remaining PFAS use in their products to the state.
- By January 2032, nonessential PFAS use in products will be banned outright.
Because the law puts responsibility on manufacturers and retailers rather than consumers, it prevents PFAS from ever entering our water, soil, and bodies in the first place, rather than trying to filter it out after the damage is done.
It is vital that we turn off the tap of new PFAS entering our state. Nearly all of our landfills are leaching into the groundwater. This means whenever our consumer products end up in landfills, the chemicals within them eventually leach into the water we drink. Amara’s Law is the first step in stopping this vicious cycle!
