What a Difference the Right President Makes
By Bob Wendelgass, President and CEO Today, the Obama Administration announced it is finalizing a new rule that will require automakers to increase the average fuel efficiency of cards and light trucks to 54.5 miles per gallon by 2025. By 2025, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) estimates that these new standards will cut greenhouse gas emissions by cars and light trucks in half and reduce U.S. oil consumption by 12 billion barrels of oil. More important to consumers, EPA estimates the changes will save consumers $1.7 trillion dollars in fuel costs and result in an average fuel
Safe Drinking Water and Fracking
Take Action Today! By Lynn Thorp, National Campaigns Director EnergyWire reports this week that at least 138 wells were “fracked” with diesel fuel in the last 18 months. That’s over 100 times that underground sources of drinking water were threatened by some particularly nasty chemicals. And that’s over 100 times that permits should have been issued under the Safe Drinking Water Act’s Underground Injection Control Program. That’s why we’re pushing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take the strongest steps possible to put the Safe Drinking Water Act to work in the only instances
A New Day for Safer Chemicals
By Cindy Luppi, New England Regional Director Today is a day for the history books -- for the first time since 1976 when our nation's chemical policies were put in place, the Senate Environment & Public Works Committee took a critical step on the road to safer chemicals and healthier families by voting to support reform dictated by modern science. The Safe Chemicals Act is a breath of fresh air for families across the country burdened by cancer and other chronic illness linked to toxic chemicals. It reflects input from a range of interests including health voices, environmental advocates
Going to the Peoples Summit
By Colleen Meehan, Pennsylvania Program Organizer In late June I had the opportunity to travel to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to take part in the Peoples Summit for Social and Environmental Justice, and to attend several events at the United Nations Earth Summit. The UN “Rio+20” Earth Summit joined together governments and nongovernmental organizations to discuss sustainable development measures to meet future needs of our countries, and to form a global plan of action. The Peoples Summit was more focused on what we as citizens of these states can do to combat environmental destruction, such as
Putting Drinking Water First – It’s Not Just a Talking Point
Get diesel out of fracking! By Lynn Thorp, National Campaigns Director Clean Water Action works on drinking water because we believe that the nation ought to act like drinking water matters. Polls show people think drinking water matters. But when it comes to our activities like, growing food, building cities and towns, and producing energy, we don’t implement our health and environmental laws or control the impacts of our activities to truly prevent threats to our drinking water. Things would look a lot different if we did. “Fracking” shouldn’t be exempt from the Safe Drinking Water Act, but
