Safe Drinking Water and Fracking

By Lynn Thorp, National Campaigns Director EnergyWire reports this week that at least 138 wells were “fracked” with diesel fuel in the last 18 months.  That’s over 100 times that underground sources of drinking water were threatened by some particularly nasty chemicals. And that’s over 100 times that permits should have been issued under the Safe Drinking Water Act’s Underground Injection Control Program. That’s why we’re pushing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to take the strongest steps possible to put the Safe Drinking Water Act to work in the only instances where hydraulic fracturing is subject to the Act.  Our mobilization campaign to get comments in on EPA’s draft “Guidance” might not sound like a headline grabber, but public engagement is critical to making sure this is done right.
