Honoring a lifetime of advocacy -- Gary Steinberg
On Monday October 28th Clean Water Action will award Gary Steinberg the Annual David Zwick Memorial Award in recognition of Gary’s decades of work for social justice and environmental protection. This very fitting given Gary’s long term relationship with David. Together they built the Clean Water Action from the days it was known as the Fishermen’s Clean Water Action Project.
Gary was tasked with the mission to develop the art and science of the professional fundraising door to door and phone canvass. Gary brought a laser like focus, undaunted effort, and humor to the task. With Gary at the
Funding Baltimore's Fair Elections Fund
On September 16, the Baltimore City Council's Judiciary Committee has its hearing on the Baltimore Fair Elections Fund, important legislation to level the playing field for candidates hoping to win local offices in Baltimore. Let's End Citizens United
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision unleashed a flood. It opened the door to unlimited dark money into our politics. We’ve been dealing with the impacts ever since.
But there is hope for change.
800 cities and towns, and 20 states are calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn Citizens United. That represents 141 million Americans, 46% of the U.S. population. Popular support is overwhleming -- the debate over the idea of overturning Citizens United should be over.
Now it’s time to win, period.

Baltimore's Plastic Bag Reduction Bill: public hearings and work sessions
On Tuesday, August 6, the Baltimore City Council's Judiciary Committee held its first public hearing on the Plastic Bag Reduction Bill. This important legislation bans plastic bags in stores in Baltimore, with exceptions for bags used for products like fresh meats, unpackaged fruits, or ice, and locations like farmers' markets and pharmacies. It also puts a 5-cent fee on paper bags - part of which will help the store meet the extra cost of buying and storing paper bags, and part of which can help the city distribute free reusable bags.
