Anne Arundel County has started the process to update the General Development Plan. The General Development Plan (aka Plan 2040) is the vision for what Anne Arundel County should become. It sets the groundwork for future decisions on land use and zoning - where new homes and businesses go - that have an enormous impact on local and regional water quality. Last week, I testified at hearings in Annapolis to support Senate Joint Resolution 5 and House Joint Resolution 3, which give Maryland’s Attorney General the authority to decide to sue the federal government over actions or inactions that affect Marylanders.
Under the current system, we elect our governor, our legislature, and our attorney general. Our attorney general can respond to lawsuits and can pursue legal action if they have permission from the governor or legislature. Working for a Septic System Solution
On Tuesday, January 31st, we had our first bill hearing for SB 266 - reinstating the requirement for Best Available Technology for all new septic systems in Maryland. This fall, Governor Hogan overturned the previous regulation that required that new septic systems treat their nitrogen pollution. Old systems do nothing to prevent the nitrogen from our waste from reaching our water. The new technology reduces nitrogen by 60%.
