US House Approves $170 million for Flint
In late September, the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate voted in favor of $170 million investment in water infrastructure improvements, including replacement of lead service lines, in response to Flint’s water crisis. It has now been longer than a year since Gov. Snyder and the State of Michigan publicly recognized the Flint water crisis, and longer than two years since the city began drawing water from the Flint River without the proper corrosion controls in place to protect residents from lead in the distribution system.

Maryland 2017 Legislative Preview
In Maryland, the General Assembly meets every year for ninety days, from January to April. During this time, the State’s legislators introduce legislation on a variety of issues and must work together to pass a budget for the year ahead. With the 2017 Maryland General Assembly Session quickly approaching, Clean Water Action is putting together an ambitious plan to advocate for important legislation that will protect and preserve the environment. Dr. Nichole Keway Biber is a tribal citizen of the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians (Waganakising Odawa), and is part of the Turtle Clan (Mishiike Dodem). Her family currently resides in East Lansing, where she earned her PhD in English from MSU. Nichole began working for Clean Water Action as the Mid-Michigan Campaign Organizer in September of 2023, in a continuation of her efforts as a Water Protector to Shut Down Line 5. She is motivated to help stand against all such threats to traditional lifeways and the well-being of every community in the Great Lakes water basin and beyond.

Shay joins Clean Water Action as the SouthCoast Energy Efficiency Outreach Specialist. As a Fall River native, she is excited to help expand access to energy efficiency in a place she will always call home as well as in Taunton, Westport, New Bedford, and Attleboro.
