We did it! Our top priority bill—to ban PFAS in food packaging, firefighting foam, require the state to implement a take-back program and shift to a safe, fluorine-free foam was signed into law!
Session finally ends in Minnesota with wins for Clean Water!
The Minnesota legislative special session is concluded - and we're happy to announce several victories! First and foremost: Minnesota will now join a number of other states in banning PFAS in food packaging starting in 2024! PFAS are “forever chemicals” that do not break down in the environment and carry with them health risks like cancer and decreased immune response when people are exposed. We have been working to address the many sources of PFAS contamination and to our environment once PFAS containing packaging is thrown away. We appreciate the work of the original bill sponsors Rep. Opposition to Toxic Polystyrene Gaining Traction
Many of us have been in the awkward situation of attending a family picnic or community event where we line up for food and discover the only choice for dishware is polystyrene (ex. Styrofoam and similar products). This is the moment where I tend to sigh and assess my options. I can either skip eating, ask if there is another option and use this as a teaching moment, or pile food on my polystyrene plate adding to my daily intake of carcinogens. Community Letter -- Pass the PFAS Action Act
The science is clear: PFAS have been linked to serious health problems through decades of animal, worker, and human studies. Unfortunately, EPA has failed to take steps to restrict air and water releases, reduce PFAS in our tap water, or clean up the nation's most contaminated sites. H.R. 2467 will set clear deadlines requiring EPA to do just that.
