The political and policy environment for protecting clean water has never been more challenging. Clean Water Action, its members and allies remain on the front lines of the fight to keep fundamental protections strong and effective — for our water, for our health, for our climate and the planet’s future.

Nutrient pollution from nitrogen and phosphorus runoff is one of the most pervasive water quality problems in the U.S., and there's increasing concern about its impact on drinking water.

As a known threat to drinking water sources, enhanced oil recovery is regulated by the federal Safe Drinking Water Act Underground Injection Control program. Our research has found this program to be inadequate in protecting groundwater, relying on outdated rules, and insufficient data collection and staffing levels to ensure safety.

Protecting sources of drinking water from contamination is essential to ensuring safe drinking water. Source Water Protection includes maintaining the health of streams, wetlands, and other water bodies, but there has been confusion over which water resources are covered under Clean Water Act pollution control programs following Supreme Court decisions in 2001 and 2006 and subsequent Bush Administration policies.

The Aquifer Exemption program in the Safe Drinking Water Act (SDWA) Underground Injection Control (UIC) program allows certain oil and gas and mining activity to occur in groundwater that would otherwise be protected as a drinking water source.
