This Water a Flower Day, I'm reflecting on how lucky I am that my husband has an incredibly green thumb. I can grow food and, in fairness, those plants flower, too. However, the beautiful explosion of colors in our yard all year long must be completely credited to my better half.
Flowers, like the ones photographed from our garden, bring beauty and grace to our lives. The natural colors that spring from the earth are magnificent. And I have found that when you plant them intentionally – and with your own planting zone in mind, of course – to bring joy through the seasons, you notice something special; each season blends into its own tones! Spring flowers are pale with bold accents and deep green leaves that wake the earth after a winter’s rest. Summer flowers are bolder, brighter, like the sun is shining deep in the roots. Fall flowers mellow into warm sunsets and harvest meals. And winter flowers share a resilience with the world that, when we pay close attention, reminds us to slow down and breathe.
We sometimes forget to “stop and smell the roses” when life feels hectic or we are feeling stressed. It’s hard to take that moment to breathe and appreciate the beauty around us. Water a Flower Day gives us a little excuse to do just that. With intention, we can grab that watering can or that hose and share a moment with our plants. And the real beauty of flowers? They grow anywhere. Whether you live in a gilded mansion or in a 3rd floor studio that has an endless staircase and seemingly no light, you can grow flowers.
