Public Trust means that the people of Michigan own our water resources, and the State has a solemn responsibility to protect our water for the use and enjoyment of Michigan residents. This is an important yet often overlooked piece of our bundle of rights in a democratic society.
PFAS-Containing Firefighting Foams
Firefighters are particularly at risk from PFAS exposure because they are exposed to AFFF during both training and actual fires. Additionally, some of their firefighting gear contain PFAS chemicals. A study of Los Angeles fire fighters done by Biomonitoring California demonstrated elevated levels of PFOS and other PFAS chemicals in their test subjects.

You may never have heard of PFAS, but they're a class of toxic chemicals that are everywhere. These man-made chemicals have traveled through the environment into the far reaches of the world, and they don’t break down and go away, which is why they're called “forever” chemicals.
