Massachusetts prepares to act on climate
Last Wednesday, I was able to visit the office of the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) for the first time with Clean Water Action. The MassDEP was hosting a day of meetings to discuss potential regulations and limits for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in the Commonwealth with their stakeholders. Present at these meetings were several environmental non-profit organizations, staff members from the MassDEP, MassDPU, and MassDOT, and an audience of concerned citizens.

There's lots of energy at work in Massachusetts. I have to admit, I'm a little surprised—after a stunningly high-stakes legislative session and two huge Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decisions ( Case 1: kids sue state to win climate regulation; Case 2: unlikely allies team up to tell the Governor he can't tax us for new fracked gas pipelines) I was expecting things to slow down a little. Well, Labor Day is behind us and fall is here, unofficially. What stands out for me this summer is the weirdness of the weather and...manatees! It is official: we have just experienced the warmest summer yet -- NASA has confirmed that and is predicting that 2016 will be the warmest year on record, on track to surpass 2015 which previously held the title.
Additionally, this summer was the driest on record for Boston, with under 4" of rain in June, July and August. And my poor garden is hurting, as are our region's farmers.

A New Energy Law in Massachusetts
It has been a busy, busy two years.
Advocates, activists, health professionals, clean energy entrepeneurs, faith leaders, researchers, scientists, and public officials in every corner of the state have been pushing forward clean energy and climate solutions that empower communities, invest in our local economies and deal a blow to the ever-expanding footprint of fossil fuels.

Writing in the Boston Globe just a few days ago, Karenna Gore - Director of the Center for Earth Ethics and daughter of former Vice President Al Gore - stated that "[T]he oil and gas industry is now an empire that makes its own rules." I couldn't agree more. But the tough questions that are being asked not only in print, but in public protest and in the halls of power are exposing the incredible reach of the fossil fuel lobby and fueling the popular movement fighting to shut down polluters' lock on our society.
