Environmental and health advocates call on Massachusetts legislators to get toxic chemicals out of children’s products
BOSTON--Silent Spring Institute published a peer-reviewed article today that details how widespread per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are in children’s products, including clothes, bedding, and furnishings. In response, the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, a coalition of 60 environmental and public health nonprofits, called upon Massachusetts state legislators to pass pending bills that would protect Massachusetts’ children from PFAS and other toxic chemicals.

Using Water Pollution Permits to Keep PFAS out of Drinking Water
Last week EPA issued a memo detailing how the agency will use its water pollution permitting program to limit discharges of PFAS to rivers, streams, lakes, and other water bodies. As we’ve written before on our blog, the Clean Water Act has many tools that can be used to keep these toxic fluorinated “forever chemicals” out of our water. Benefits include shifting the burden away from drinking water systems and communities to clean-up PFAS and back on to the industries that financially benefit from using these chemicals. This memo is a welcome step, but more urgent action is needed.

In a huge victory for public health, the Rhode Island House voted today to pass H7438 which bans toxic PFAS and heavy metals in packaging including food packaging.
Victory! Pittsburgh Enacts Single-Use Bag Ban
Victory! Just in time for Earth Day, Pittsburgh City Council unanimously passed a ban on wasteful single-use plastic bags. The ordinance is expected to reduce distribution of nearly 110 million plastic bags annually and decrease plastic litter. Clean Water Action is grateful to have played a part in making this happen. Pittsburgh is now the 6th municipality in the commonwealth to pass this kind of policy, joining Philadelphia, West Chester, and others. The ordinance prohibits retailers and restaurants from distributing single-use
