Taking on Toxics (and more!) in the Minnesota Legislature
Update: The PFAS Prevention Package was introduced in the 2022 legislative session. all but one of the 8 bills made it into the final Environmental Omnibus bill in the House. Like most bills this year, it did not pass by the end of session. However, with the issue of these harmful “forever chemicals” continuing to gain visibility and concern, we expect to keep making progress on state policy next session.
The Minnesota Legislature is gathering now for their 2022 session. Last year Clean Water Action helped to pass a ban on PFAS (The Forever Chemicals) in Food Packaging and successfully worked
HB141/SB23: The Transit Equity Act
Today, the Transit Equity Act has its hearing in the Senate, and tomorrow, in the House! This important legislation puts measures in place to ensure that Maryland transportation planning is more equitable, and prevent something like the 2015 cancelation of the Red Line project in Baltimore from ever happening again. We're proud to support this bill in collaboration with the Baltimore Transit Equity Coalition and as part of the Mid-Atlantic Justice Coalition. Small, local composting operations are a big part of the Zero Waste solution! That's why we're so excited to support SB229/ HB184, to promote the development of on-farm compost facilities. In collaboration with the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and Shore Rivers, we're also supporting amendments to make sure that these compost operations don't have unintended environmental consequences. Testimony for SB124: Grant Program to Reduce and Compost School Waste
On January 19, 2022, we testified in favor of SB124, legislation to create a grants program for public schools to divert food waste and develop composting infrastructure! Check out the public hearing here and read a recap here. This legislation passed in 2022, but was not funded.
