Composting on Farms in Montgomery County: Testimony on ZTA 20-04
On December 1, the Montgomery County Council held a hearing on Zoning Text Amendment 20-04, a bill to increase the amount of organic waste that farms can bring in from off-site for composting or mulching. While this is a small piece of the zero waste puzzle, measures like this across Maryland will help keep organic waste out of landfills and incinerators, sequester carbon and build healthy soils, and even help support Maryland's agricultural economy. Georgetown University is currently proposing to cut down 249 acres of Southern Maryland’s largest forest to build a large-scale solar facility. Maryland General Assembly Increases Subsidies for Burning Trash
The Maryland General Assembly has passed the Clean Energy Jobs Act, requiring that Maryland reach 50% renewable energy by 2030. While we support urgent, transformative action to fight the climate crisis, the bill increases the amount of money available to subsidize burning trash for energy. Since 2011, trash incineration has received the same “clean energy” credits as truly renewable sources like wind and solar.
