REI--Will you put our health and planet first?
Recognizing this alarming public health and environmental issue, Clean Water Action and allies at the Mind the Store campaign have been urging REI and other retailers to ban PFAS in outdoor apparel. To date, there have been more than 110,000 petition signatures and emails from REI customers, letters from more than 100 local, state, and national organizations calling on the company to lead the outdoor apparel industry away from the entire class of PFAS.

BOSTON--Silent Spring Institute published a peer-reviewed article today that details how widespread per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are in children’s products, including clothes, bedding, and furnishings. In response, the Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow, a coalition of 60 environmental and public health nonprofits, called upon Massachusetts state legislators to pass pending bills that would protect Massachusetts’ children from PFAS and other toxic chemicals.

Recognizing Women Leaders: Lee Ketelsen
As National Women’s History Month is winding down, we’d like to end it by honoring and recognizing an important women leader in the Clean Water Action family. Lee served as Massachusetts Director and then New England Director for Clean Water Action from 1985 to 2010 and is now a member of the Clean Water Action Massachusetts Advisory Board.

In March 2017, Boston Magazine published Why Cancer is Killing Boston’s Firefighters--a powerful article about two Boston firefighters, Glenn Preston and Peter Kannler and their battles with cancer. Both men were diagnosed in their mid-30’s; Preston was still fighting but Kannler had lost the battle. The article pointed to toxic chemicals as a culprit and specifically brought to light the issue of toxic flame retardants in common household items contributing to cancer, and other adverse health effects for firefighters like Glenn and Peter.

The calendar says it is officially spring now, but we're not feeling it on the ground in the Northeast. We just experienced our fourth Nor'easter in recent weeks, the "Foureaster" as friends are joking on Facebook. In my town of Winthrop, Massachusetts, we have been rocked by this "new normal" on our small peninsula with only two roads in and out of town.
