Maryland legislation passed in 2021 requiring large food waste generators to divert away from landfills and incinerators and towards a list of zero waste strategies including composting, donating serviceable food, and using for agricultural purposes.
The Reality of Reusable Plastics
The “correct” use of melamine foodware requires that the dish not be heated above 160 degrees. When food is served on melamine plates there is relatively low cross contamination from the plate to the food. However, once you put that plate in the microwave, you’re immediately pushing past that safety zone.
The fight for a foam-free Baltimore
This week, a bill to ban styrofoam food packages was approved by Baltimore City's Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Thanks to incredible organizing by the student-led group Baltimore Beyond Plastic, who brought hundreds of elementary, middle, and high school students to rally and testify in support of the bill, it received unanimous committee support. Below are the comments we submitted on behalf of this bill. Kudos to the kids who made it possible!
