What Do We Need to Do About PFAS in California?
They’re in stain resistant carpets and clothing, cookware, some cosmetics, outdoor gear, and even dental floss. You may know them as Teflon®, or Scotchguard®. You have them in your body and they’ve been detected in 455 California drinking water sources thus far. I’m talking about a class of fluorinated chemicals, called PFAS, and they threaten California’s water and its people. Why haven’t we done more about them?

Spring is finally here! It’s my favorite time of year, despite the unpredictable Massachusetts weather. Spring means greening foliage and blooming flowers. It also means shopping for all things spring -- and the first place I head to is Marshalls, or T.J. Maxx. These stores have great deals and a large selection. As a customer, neighbor (the parent company TJX is headquartered in Massachusetts), and activist I want to be able to say “and its wide collection of safe and non-toxic products” —but I can’t.

What is your vision of a dream job? One in which you can come home from the job safe every day? Well, Clean Water Action allies at The Massachusetts Coalition for Occupational Safety and Health (MassCOSH) fight for that vision every day for all of us. Clean Water has worked closely with the MASSCOSH team for many years to advance safe chemicals policies and innovations. We hope to prevent harm to worker health rather than mourne for workers who lose their lives on the job from contact with dangerous chemicals.

Last Tuesday, November 14th, Clean Water Action joined Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families in releasing the second annual Retailer Report Card. This report grades popular retail chains on how they address the problem of toxic chemicals, that can pose serious health threats, in the products they sell. In Massachusetts, we focused our attention on the TJX Company, since they are headquartered here in Framingham. Making Polluters Pay in Michigan
Michigan once had the strongest “polluter pay” law in the country. In 1995 the polluter pay law was gutted. Today there are hundreds of sites across the state contaminated by corporate polluters, and yet Michigan taxpayers are on the hook to pay for cleanups.
