Honoring a lifetime of advocacy -- Gary Steinberg
On Monday October 28th Clean Water Action will award Gary Steinberg the Annual David Zwick Memorial Award in recognition of Gary’s decades of work for social justice and environmental protection. This very fitting given Gary’s long term relationship with David. Together they built the Clean Water Action from the days it was known as the Fishermen’s Clean Water Action Project.
Gary was tasked with the mission to develop the art and science of the professional fundraising door to door and phone canvass. Gary brought a laser like focus, undaunted effort, and humor to the task. With Gary at the
Funding Baltimore's Fair Elections Fund
On September 16, the Baltimore City Council's Judiciary Committee has its hearing on the Baltimore Fair Elections Fund, important legislation to level the playing field for candidates hoping to win local offices in Baltimore. Clean Water Action supports initiatives like this that make our democracy work and help people speak out against developers and polluting industries. Read our testimony below!

Clean Water Action is a national environmental advocacy organization with over 11,000 members in Baltimore City. We work for
Victory! Public Financing for Howard County Elections in 2022!
On Monday night, the Howard County Council overturned Kittleman’s veto, and we now have a Citizens’ Election Fund (CB30) to enable candidates to run without deep pocketed special interest money.
Why does Clean Water Action care about how elections are funded?
CB30 makes it possible for candidates to run for office without courting large dollar amount donors. In fact, it forbids participating candidates from getting donations over $250 from any individual. That means that candidates can campaign to the general public, not a couple of wealthy donors.

Even during the slow summer months, our work continues to push Maryland forward for water quality and to fight against rollbacks on the federal level. With all of the changes happening on the federal level, it is a breath of fresh air to work in Maryland where most of our policymakers get the importance of protecting our streams and rivers. Here we may vehemently disagree on how far a policy should go, but we do not have fundamental disagreements about science or the human need for clean water.
