Michigan needs a strong statewide sanitary code
Each year, 9.4 billion gallons of raw sewage flow into our lakes and rivers from leaking septic systems, but Michigan is the only state in the U.S. without a uniform sanitary code requiring periodic inspections of septic systems. For years, we have been working to address this problem, by strengthening septic inspection requirements at the county level, and pushing for a statewide sanitary code requiring regular inspections of all septic systems in Michigan.

US House Approves $170 million for Flint
In late September, the U.S. House of Representatives and U.S. Senate voted in favor of $170 million investment in water infrastructure improvements, including replacement of lead service lines, in response to Flint’s water crisis. It has now been longer than a year since Gov. Snyder and the State of Michigan publicly recognized the Flint water crisis, and longer than two years since the city began drawing water from the Flint River without the proper corrosion controls in place to protect residents from lead in the distribution system.
