“Last week, Governor Whitmer asked Enbridge Inc., to provide financial assurance mechanisms as well as an insurance policy for the Line 5 pipeline that names the state of Michigan as coinsured. We know that nothing will protect the Great Lakes from an increasingly likely Line 5 oil spill short of revoking Enbridge’s easement, but at the very least Enbridge’s insurance policy would ensure that Michigan taxpayers aren’t left holding the bag when a devastating oil spill

“Governor Whitmer has continued to show strong leadership in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic. Her order today extending the water reconnection order at least through the end of the year is absolutely necessary to ensure that Michigan residents have access to safe, clean, affordable water for drinking and hygiene. Michigan’s water affordability problems did not begin with this pandemic, and they won’t end without further action to prohibit the practice of shutting off water for nonpayment
Will State House Lawmakers Ever Stand Up for Flint?
It was a dark, cold January day, shortly after Michigan officials had finally admitted that the people of Flint had been exposed to poisoned water running through their taps. We drove from Lansing to St Michael’s Church in Flint for an organizing meeting. Local activists, people from the non-profit community, and even experts who had run door-to-door canvasses in response to Hurricane Sandy, were all there to do something about the water crisis that is still being ignored by our state government.
