Today the US House passed HR2, the Moving America Forward Act. The House also passed an amendment to fund lead service line replacement across the nation.
Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass, released the following statement:
“The Moving America Forward Act couldn’t have come at a better time. We’ve kicked the can down the road on addressing the infrastructure crisis for way too long. We’re glad Congress finally got serious about fixing the nation’s infrastructure -- it’s time to invest in clean energy and 21st century solutions for our water, transportation, and more. We’re especially encouraged by the broad and bipartisan support for significant federal investment in replacing lead service lines.
The Environmental Protection Agency’s environmental justice review of its proposed revisions of the Safe Drinking Water Act Lead and Copper Rule found that requiring a customer contribution to improvements like lead service line replacement will result in disparate impact on low-income and communities of color. We thank Representatives, Tlaib, Kildee, Cicilline, Slotkin, and Moore for leading on this visionary federal investment to insure that all communities can accelerate replacing the largest source of lead in drinking water.
We applaud the House for passing the Moving America Forward Act and call on the Senate to act on our nation’s infrastructure needs and pass this vital legislation.”
