BGE is asking Maryland regulators for another rate hike. In this latest filing, the company wants to charge customers another $156 million for electricity, while also increasing its profit rate. Maryland families shouldn’t continue to see their bills rise as BGE puts shareholder profits ahead of affordability and accountability.

Since 2010, BGE has nearly doubled electric delivery rates and tripled rates for gas delivery, far exceeding inflation. While they’ve sought to justify many of these increases with investments in costly infrastructure projects, the lion’s share has gone to their highly criticized gas pipeline replacement program - a program that an independent analysis found is motivated more by expanding gas infrastructure than eliminating safety risks. Customers deserve a utility that invests wisely, eliminates actual safety risks, and works with the state to transition to clean, affordable energy, not one that keeps coming back to Marylanders to ask for more money to increase their profits. Higher profits for its shareholders. Less affordability for its customers.
