Late Friday afternoon the Massachusetts House voted to ban 10 toxic flame retardants in children’s products and household furniture! This will be a huge step forward to protect the health of children and firefighters – but first the Massachusetts Senate has to approve the bill and send it to the Governor’s desk before the clock strikes midnight on Monday.
There are two things that you can do now!
- Call your State Senator now (you can leave a message!) at 617-722-2000 and tell them: Please do all that you can to pass H.5024 Children and Firefighters Protection Act, before the session ends Monday night. I'm counting on you to protect the health of children and firefighters.
- Donate now to help protect children, firefighters and all families from toxic chemicals now and in 2019!.
Toxic flame retardants are linked to cancer, nervous system damage, decreased fertility, and other health problems. Unfortunately, they don’t stay in the products, they leach out and contaminate house dust and our bodies. When the products burn, the flame retardants turn into toxic fumes which harm firefighters. The good news is that they are completely unnecessary for fire safety! Chemical industry lobbyists will be working hard to keep this from becoming law so your support is critical to protecting children and firefighters.
H.5024 is sponsored by Representative Marjorie Decker (D-Cambridge) in the House. A similar bill, S.2555, sponsored by Senator Cynthia Stone Creem (D-Newton), was passed by the Senate in May. The two bills are not identical and so the Senate must vote again for this to come to the Governor’s desk.
