Did you know that breast cancer rates in Massachusetts are among the highest in the nation? And that the rates on the Cape and Islands are the highest in Massachusetts? The scientists at Silent Spring Institute, founded in 1994, are working to solve the intricate puzzle of environmental links to this breast cancer epidemic.  Their landmark research has ranged from studying the toxic contamination of Cape Cod well water to examination of toxic flame retardants building up in indoor household dust, and beyond.
The top five reasons we highlight the scientists of Silent Spring Institute as rock stars:
  • They are shining the light on  prevention of breast cancer, not just treatment
  • Their work is a tribute to Rachel Carson who died of breast cancer just two years after her ground-breaking book Silent Spring was published…and they truly carry on in her galvanizing spirit.
  • They are our home-team sheroes:  they have attracted some of the most talented women scientists in the country, and have made a home for them here in Massachusetts
  • They rock the House…and the Senate… by sharing their ground-breaking research with members of the media and decision-makers in our government,  influential messengers in ways that only scientists with their impressive credentials can be.
We celebrate these powerful leaders and offer our congratulations for their many accomplishments. In honor of the Silent Spring Institute and Rachel Carson, please take action in support of legislation introduced by Representative Jay Kaufman and Senator Ken Donnelly to prevent harm to our health from toxic hazards.
