Our field canvass has been educating and mobilizing residents in the metro Denver area about these potential threats of drilling and fracking on BLM public lands in South Park Basin. They collected nearly 2,000 postcards and hand-written letters to Colorado BLM Director Helen Hankins urging her to create a Master Leasing Plan for the South Park Basin to ensure their drinking water is protected. Our members wrote some amazing, passionate, and insightful letters to Director Hankins about their concerns with industry practices, water protection, and stories of how drilling and fracking have impacted them personally. Thank you to all of our members who made their voices heard!
This week the Colorado BLM held a Resource Advisory Council (RAC) to discuss a number of topics, including oil and gas drilling and fracking. Wednesday’s meeting was open for public comment, so I went to testify on behalf of Clean Water Action and our members! I was able to share with the advisory council our members concerns and delivered the 2,000 postcards and hand-written letters to Director Hankins. I was one of nine who showed up to testify in front of the Advisory Council – the most testimony the Front Range RAC had EVER seen! All of us brought a similar message; drilling and fracking has potential risks that threaten our land, air, and water and BLM must create a Master Leasing Plan with broad community support before any land in the South Park Basin is leased for energy development.
We are asking for a Master Leasing Plan (MLP) because unlike a Resource Management Plan or Environmental Assessment, a MLP can determine if public lands should even be on the table for oil and gas leasing, while the others are designed to create a plan of action after the parcels have been leased. This is why it’s so critical the Colorado BLM create a Master Leasing Plan for the South Park Basin, because our drinking water is too valuable to gamble with. Director Hankins needs to hear from you TODAY. Let her know you support creating a Master Leasing Plan for the South Park Basin. These are OUR public lands, and we depend on her to make decisions that will protect and preserve our air, land, and water!

We’ve been hard at work on our Don’t Frack Denver’s Water campaign – and it’s going great! We’ve found overwhelming support along the Front Range for our efforts to protect drinking water and our environment from the impact of drilling and fracking. This campaign specifically addresses the parcels of Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands near the headwaters of the South Platte River and three reservoirs that provide drinking water for nearly 2 million metro Denver residents. Drilling and fracking in this sensitive area has the potential to not only pollute drinking water sources for metro Denver, but could devastate wildlife habitats and impact pristine hunting and fishing areas.
