Clean Water Voters made their voices heard on November 6th. From Florida to Pennsylvania to Michigan to California, they went to the polls and made sure that we reelected the President with the best environmental record in recent history. Clean Water Action members also helped to elect candidates like Tim Kaine (VA), Elizabeth Warren (MA), and Chris Murphy (CT) to the Senate along with dozens of members of the US House and State Legislatures. Clean Water Action is proud of our work to support clean water candidates. In the last few months we have spoken with almost a half million households, polled over 275,000 households and distributed 225,000 pieces of literature. Putting the right people in office is an important way to make sure our state and federal policies protect our drinking water. That's exactly what clean water voters did yesterday! We are celebrating now – we should be – it was a hard fought campaign and a second term for President Obama means good things for our water, communities, and out health. But, we can’t just sit back and get comfortable. We have work to do. Re-Electing President Obama means we can help him finish what he started. We can support his efforts to reduce toxic greenhouse gas emissions from power plants, push EPA to finish rules protecting our communities from coal ash, and finalizing protections for the small streams and wetlands that feed the drinking water sources for nearly a third of us. Clean Water Action will be right there, building support and making sure the rules are as strong as possible. It won’t be easy. Anti-environment forces maintained their majority in the U.S. House of Representatives and we can expect to see anti-health and environment bills introduced, “debated”, and passed in the House during the next two years. We will be pressing the President and the leaders of the US Senate to make sure that these bills suffer a quick demise in the Senate. We will also be organizing to make progress where we can, through action by EPA or other federal agencies and through legislation where we can get it passed We‘re going to have to continue to fight. In fact we’re already preparing. We hope that you’ll join us. But, for now, we can celebrate a little.
