On Wednesday the House Appropriations Committee passed an amendment to a
spending bill that would block the Administration from finishing new Clean Water Act polices to protect streams, lakes, wetlands and other water resources. These new Clean Water Act policies are needed to
replace policies enacted by the Bush administration that left many of our nation’s streams and wetlands more vulnerable to pollution. This latest assault on the Clean Water Act was led by Representative Denny Rehberg of Montana (R- At-Large).
As we mark the 40
th Anniversary of the Clean Water Act, it is disheartening to witness the
endless barrage by some in Congress against commonsense polices to protect communities from pollution. Thanks to the Clean Water Act our most important resource is better protected than it was forty years ago. In fact, just this week researchers at the University of Southern California released a
study that documents the Clean Water Act’s success at reducing heavy metal pollution in coastal waters in Southern California.
We cannot let Congress put our water at risk by turning back the clock on important clean water protections.
Tell President Obama that you support new commonsense clean water policies to protect the drinking water sources for over 117 million Americans.
