Washington DC -- Today Joe Biden, after having earned more votes than any Presidential candidate in history, surpassed 270 votes in the Electoral college when Pennsylvania was called in his favor. His total could grow as elections officials continue to count votes -- he leads in Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia. Despite this and despite the fact that Joe Biden has significantly more total votes, Donald Trump refuses to concede. The Trump campaign has pledged to challenge the results in court.

Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass, released the following statement:

“Today is a great day. I am awed by the number of people who made their voices heard, despite a pandemic, an economic crisis, and challenges to voting. It’s incredible and it shows that the nation is ready for change and for a leader who will put people first. It also shows what we can achieve through strength in numbers, holding firm to our values, and demanding a future where we can all thrive.

Thanks to the power of the people, we finally have an expiration date on the Trump administration. For too long Donald Trump has sown division and undermined our democracy; dismantled basic protections for our water, air, and health; and let corporate special interests call the shots. We can begin to put that behind us and start to put our nation back together. We’re thrilled and eager for President-elect Biden and Vice President-Elect Harris to put their teams in place and get to work.

We know it won’t be easy to reverse the damage the Trump administration has caused, and it won’t happen quickly, but we can do it. There is a deep desire to protect clean water, take action on the climate crisis, and address the environmental injustice that impacts the health and well-being of too many communities throughout the nation. We’re ready to capture the energy from this election and work with the Biden administration, while also holding them accountable to the promises that were made to safeguard our water, health, and democracy.”
