“For years, Clean Water Action along with a broad coalition of Michigan residents, business owners, and indigenous leaders have been calling for our state leadership to decommission Enbridge’s dangerous and outdated Line 5 pipeline, which remains an ever-present threat to the Straits of Mackinac, and the waters of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron. Today, Attorney General Nessel has filed a lawsuit in Ingham County Circuit Court to do just that.
We proudly stand with Attorney General Nessel in her efforts to end the threat that Line 5 poses to our Great Lakes. Line 5 is not critical infrastructure to Michigan, it is little more than a shortcut that delivers Canadian oil to Canada while Michigan bears the risk. Over the last few months, Enbridge and their allies in the Michigan Chamber of Commerce and the Operating Engineers Local 324 have been engaged in a disinformation campaign, spreading demonstrably false statements concerning the impact of a Line 5 shutdown. We are glad that the Attorney General has seen past this blatant attempt to scare Michigan’s elected leaders and is moving forward swiftly to end the threat to our Great Lakes for good.”
