Celebrating Black Excellence

As we celebrate Black History Month at Clean Water Action, we recognize individuals whose work not only honors the legacy of the past but actively shapes a more just and sustainable future. This month is a time for reflection, celebration, and a renewed commitment to justice.

Today, we are proud to recognize X Braithwaite, an Environmental Justice Organizer, leader, and advocate in New Jersey, for her extraordinary contributions to the fight for environmental justice. Grassroots organizers like X are the driving force behind real change, particularly in Black and Brown communities, where environmental injustices are most severe.

X’s commitment to ensuring clean water, air, and healthier environments is not just professional—it’s deeply personal, shaped by her own lived experiences. We applaud her for taking bold steps to hold polluters accountable while amplifying the voices of frontline communities.

X Braithwaite - Clean Water Champion

Under the direction of state director, Amy Goldsmith at Clean Water Action, X has led influential campaigns that have made a lasting and transformative impact.

“I am especially proud of my work on the Safe Water, Safe Lives campaign, which fights for clean drinking water in correctional facilities, and the Clean Beauty for Environmental Justice campaign, which raises awareness about toxic chemicals in personal care products disproportionately marketed to women and femmes of color. Environmental justice is racial justice; this recognition is a testament to the power of community-driven advocacy, and I am grateful to be part of this movement. I am committed to ensuring that those most impacted are not only heard but lead the fight for solutions!”  X Braithwaite

A recent graduate of Guilford College with degrees in Community & Justice Studies and African & African American Studies, X brings a strong foundation in restorative justice and collaborative advocacy to every project. Hailing from Newark, NJ, X is deeply committed to social justice and community engagement, expressing her creativity through poetry, crocheting and advocacy.

We celebrate X’s leadership, passion, and relentless pursuit of environmental justice. Their work is a powerful reminder that when communities lead, lasting change follows.

Congratulations X Braithwaite. You are a Clean Water Champion!
