Collaborating for Success: Stakeholder Engagement for Sustainable Groundwater Management Act Implementation

In August 2014, the California Legislature passed the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act. For the first time, CA groundwater will have to be managed to protect the long-term reliability of the resource. Achieving the objective of sustainability will ultimately depend on the commitment and participation of a large number of actors throughout its implementation.

In August 2014, the California Legislature passed the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), marking a fundamental shift in the management of water resources in California. For the first time, groundwater in the state will have to be managed to protect the long-term reliability of the resource. SGMA is thus an important step forward, but achieving the objective of sustainability will ultimately depend on the commitment and participation of a large number of actors throughout its implementation.

“Every conversation about water ought to begin with conservation.” Those were the words of Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper in his 2013 State of the State Address. In May 2013, Governor Hickenlooper issued an executive order directing the Colorado Water Conservation Board to develop a “State Water Plan” that would create a roadmap for water use.
