Many of us are feeling defeated in the wake of this November’s election results. A Trump presidency was both feared and unexpected, but a republican controlled congress may actually be the hidden danger we’ve all been missing.
When I left my office job in Boston to work on elections in Nashua New Hampshire, I was not sure quite what to expect. Even though I was working on local races and not the presidential race, I feared the wrath of Trump from angry Republican voters and anticipated many arguments at the door. I was wrong. Not every Republican voter was as angry or disillusioned with the world as Trump himself.
I am so proud of the work I did, organizing a canvass and door-knocking, talking to citizens about the future of their New Hampshire. The races in New Hampshire were EXTREMELY close, Maggie Hassan won a Senate seat by only 1,000 votes! This is MY silver lining but there are many victories to celebrate. Here in Massachusetts, 14 of the 16 state candidates we endorsed won their races, in Pennsylvania Clean Water helped elect the state’s next Attorney General Joel Shapiro, and even in Texas local candidates endorsed by Clean Water Action won their races.
The work I did in New Hampshire means progressive leaders like Hassan will work in the Senate to protect policies like action on climate change, paid family leave and affordable education. It’s important now more than ever to support leaders in congress; their jobs are harder than ever.
