Today we endorsed Joe Biden for President. (Note: Joe Biden selected Kamala Harris as his running mate after this post was published.)
Why? Because he has bold plans to address the climate crisis and environmental racism, to protect our water, and to reverse the damage done by President Trump.
Also, we can’t afford another day of the Trump administration, let alone 4 more years.
Biden’s commitments to use the power of the federal government to protect people, restore our role as a global leader, and invest in clean energy solutions now are how we begin to recover from Trump’s destructive administration. Joe Biden has pledged to reverse Trump administration rollbacks of environmental and health protections and strengthen enforcement of critical environmental laws. Unlike the currentPresident, Biden will ensure that data and science drive policy decisions about our health and water. He’ll make investments in people and infrastructure that will protect communities and build resilience against climate change.
We have spent over three years defending critical Clean Water Act programs that keep pollution out of our drinking water. Biden has committed to reversing these rollbacks and to working for clean water for all communities. He has pledged to make polluters pay for the damage they have done.
Black, Indigenous, and other communities of color have borne the brunt of pollution and the impacts of climate change for decades. We’ve allowed this injustice to fester for too long But instead of acting to protect people, we’ve seen President Trump ignore environmental injustice while his policies exacerbated environmental racism. We can’t let this happen any longer.
Joe Biden will make environmental justice a priority, pledging to coordinate federal government activities to fight environmental racism. Biden will revise and re-invigorate the 1994 Executive Order on Environmental Justice and establish an Environmental and Climate Justice division within the Department of Justice. Joe Biden will ensure robust action to act on climate and will center the needs of frontline communities, Black communities, and other communities of color.. His plans include goals for a 100% clean energy economy by 2050 and a carbon free power sector by 2035. He will end subsidies for the fossil fuel industry and ban new oil and gas permits on public lands.
We’ve let money warp our democracy for too long and President Trump is actively undermining people’s faith in our elections. We need a President who will fight for fair elections, ensure states have the funding they need to enact reforms at the ballot box. Joe Biden wants to make our democracy stronger and more fair. He understands we need to protect the right to vote, ensure access to voting is safe and equitable, and drastically reduce the influence of money on our elections.
Repairing the damage Trump has done won’t be easy or quick. It will require vision, moral clarity, a willingness to listen, and a leader who will act in the best interest of all of us. Joe Biden is that leader.
