By Michael Kelly, Communications Director - Follow Michael on Twitter: @MichaelEdKelly Earth Week kicks off today and what better way to celebrate than standing up for Clean Water? President Obama’s proposal to fix the Clean Water Act, which was broken by the Bush Administration, is open for public comment. And we need a lot of public comments – because polluters are doing everything they can to stop the proposal. Click here to join thousands of Americans and tell President Obama and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that you want to #ProtectCleanWater. Learn more here. This is huge - we’ve been trying to put the Clean Water Act back together for more than a decade – now we need to show the Administration how much support exists for this proposal to put drinking water first. Here is what’s at stake: half of our streams and nearly 20 million acres of wetlands and the drinking water for 1 in 3 Americans. It simple: protect clean water now or let polluters have their way and watch as our streams and wetlands continue to be destroyed. It won’t be easy.  Polluters and their allies in Congress have tried to stop us from fixing this mess and protecting streams and wetlands every step of the way. These are many of the same groups and politicians who have worked to undermine the Clean Water Act since it was passed in 1972. It’s no surprise that Big Ag, the oil and gas industry, the coal industry, and more are standing in the way now. This isn’t a partisan issue. Poll after poll has shown that the public, regardless of party, supports safeguards for our streams and wetlands. The public has been able to see through polluters’ lies. We just have to make sure our elected officials get the message – protect clean water and represent the people, not the polluters who want to dismantle the Clean Water Act. We’re working with our allies and all of our members to show President Obama and Congress that Americans want to protect clean water.  Thousands of people have already weighed in and we expect hundreds of thousands to stand with us over the course of the campaign. We’re going to win and our streams and wetlands will be protected. All you have to do to get involved is click here. If you want to learn more, visit this page.
