Washington DC -- Today former Minneapolis police office, Derek Chauvin, was convicted on all three charges in the murder of George Floyd.

Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass, released the following statement:

“We are glad that some measure of justice was served and we hope that this verdict will bring some accountability to those who murdered George Floyd.

That justice was served in this case is remarkable because accountability for police violence is rare. Too many officers never truly have to answer for their actions, even when there is clear evidence as there was in this case. In the year since George Floyd was murdered, hundreds of people have been killed by the police and people peacefully protesting for racial justice were assaulted and arrested across the nation.

We hope that justice for George Floyd is the start of a new chapter but we know that is possible only if we continue this nation’s overdue reckoning with institutional racism and white supremacy. We know we have a long way to go, but we stand in solidarity with communities of color and continue our commitment to dismantle racism, both within Clean Water Action and throughout our society.”
