Representative Brian Elder Releases Pro-Line 5 Sign-on Statement Riddled with Factual Errors

Thursday, July 11, 2019

The following statement can be attributed to Sean McBrearty, Michigan Program Organizer, Clean Water Action:

“Clean Water Action was alarmed to see Representative Brian Elder’s sign on statement released today, which urges Attorney General Nessel to abdicate her constitutional duty as public trustee of the Great Lakes by dropping her lawsuit against Enbridge Energy, and urges Governor Whitmer to scrap all of the good work she has done on climate change so far by approving construction of Enbridge Energy’s desired Line 5 oil tunnel. Upon reading the statement, the glaring factual inaccuracies were too difficult to ignore, so we decided to correct the statement for him. In the future, should he choose to include facts in statements relating to our environment, we would be glad to collaborate with his office. Here are our revisions to his statement.”

Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. Clean Water Action is Michigan’s largest grassroots conservation group with over 250,000 members across the state. Through direct advocacy and education we organize Michigan residents to protect the Great Lakes and our water resources. Learn more at
