After Two Years of the Divisive Trump Administration, Americans are Looking to the Future
Washington, D.C. -- President Trump tonight will give his 2nd State of the Union address as members of Congress are struggling to negotiate a deal to avoid another government shutdown, the President is threatening to reject any deal that doesn’t include funding for a border wall, and former coal lobbyist Andrew Wheeler advanced to a final vote to become permanent Administer of the Environmental Protection Agency.
Clean Water Action President and CEO, Bob Wendelgass, released the following statement:
“The President doesn’t get it. Americans rejected his divisive politics and damaging policies in November, but that hasn’t stopped President Trump from shutting down the government in pursuit of an unnecessary, unpopular, and damaging wall. It hasn’t stopped his EPA from proposing the most aggressive attack on protections for clean water since the Clean Water Act was passed in 1972. And it hasn’t stopped him doubling down on his worst ideas.
Whatever dark present or future the President will describe tonight is far from reality. Americans voted for change in November and Congress is beginning to respond with bold ideas. The first bill introduced in the House of Representatives would make our democracy work for everyone, not just wealthy campaign donors. We’re debating the best way to move toward a clean energy future. We loudly rejected the President’s wall and flight attendants, air traffic controllers, and every day Americans led the way and helped end the longest government shutdown in history. Finally, thousands of people are already on record opposed to the Trump administration’s Dirty Water Rule. Americans are speaking out and organizing to stop the President’s ideas.
The state of our union is resilient. Despite more than two years of the President’s dangerous politics, Americans are looking toward the future."
Since our founding during the campaign to pass the landmark Clean Water Act in 1972, Clean Water Action has worked to win strong health and environmental protections by bringing issue expertise, solution-oriented thinking and people power to the table. We will protect clean water in the face of attacks from a polluter friendly Administration and Congress.
