Clean Water Action is a national, grassroots environmental organization that seeks to protect the environment and safeguard public health, promote passage of strong environmental laws, and help communities address local environmental problems affecting them. Clean Water Action has nearly one million members nationally. Clean Water Fund provides research, education, organizing, and technical assistance to strengthen grassroots environmental efforts around the country, promoting the public interest on issues related to water, natural resources, health, and a healthy economy.  Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund work together on selected campaigns and programs.  

Clean Water Action and Clean Water Fund are searching for a Deputy Director to lead and advance their initiatives in Minnesota. This role involves close collaboration with the State Director to achieve legislative, fundraising, staffing, and community engagement objectives. The Deputy Director will play a pivotal role in shaping and executing climate change programs at local and state levels, encompassing strategic campaigns, coalition formation, policy research, and public awareness efforts. Responsibilities include organizing online and offline activities, orchestrating events, generating media exposure, crafting communication materials, building and guiding volunteer teams, representing the organization in regional and national coalitions, and contributing to fundraising strategies. Regular travel within Minnesota, occasional national travel, and engagement with the state legislature are integral aspects of the role.

Responsibilities 

  • Overall responsibility for leading and developing Clean Water’s work in Minnesota, including the following:      
  •  Work closely with the State Director regarding legislative, fundraising, staffing, and community outreach goals.
  • Work with the State Director to develop and oversee programmatic goals related to climate change at the local and state levels in Minnesota, including legislative and electoral campaigns, coalition building, research/policy development, and public education. 
  • With regards to climate change programmatic work:
  • Conduct on-line and off-line organizing efforts, building and supporting climate change program activities, and conducting outreach and mobilization of Clean Water Action members.
  • Make public presentations and organize events and earn media opportunities.
  • Create outreach and communication materials, including content for website and online outreach activities.
  • Recruit, train, and lead a strong volunteer leadership team. 
  • Represent organization to regional and national campaigns and coalitions.
  • Provide support to Clean Water Action’s field and phone canvasses, including briefings and training materials.
  •  Carry out other activities as directed by supervisor/State Director.
  • Develop and implement fundraising organizational plans in conjunction with the State Director.
  • Assist the State Director as needed to hire, train, and supervise program staff, contractors, and/or interns.
  • Assist the State Director to provide programmatic direction and support for field and phone canvass programs as needed. Work in partnership with canvass leadership to build strong canvass programs.
  • Support Clean Water’s efforts to become an anti-racist organization and expand our work with BIPOC communities.
  • Travel throughout Minnesota and occasional national gatherings may be required. Travel to the state legislature in St Paul on a regular basis is required.
     
Qualifications

 

  • Minimum of four years of experience in campaign organizing. Environmental experience preferred though not required. Experience with grassroots and coalition organizing and campaigns is desirable, as is experience with electoral campaigns.
  • Cultural competence, commitment to racial justice and equity, and experience working with diverse communities and staff are required. Multilingual candidates are strongly encouraged to apply. 
  • Successful fundraising experience with individual donors and events. 
  • Ability to provide strategic leadership as a leader and as a team member. 
  • Demonstrated experience supervising, supporting, and developing staff and volunteers, including people working remotely.
  • Strong interpersonal, written, and oral communication skills, computer literacy, ability to multi-task in dynamic work environment.
  • Experience with professional field and phone canvass programs is highly desirable.
