As Ann Arbor works to move away from fossil fuels with the city 2030 A2Zero carbon-neutrality plan, the current utility provider, DTE Energy, is moving in the opposite direction by investing billions in natural gas. DTE charges rates far above the national average with customers experiencing increasingly frequent outages, all while continuing to rely on fossil fuels like coal and natural gas for 2/3rds of their generated power during this climate emergency.
We deserve better for our families, community, environment, and planet. Nearly 1 in 7 Americans already get their power from a Municipal Power Utility, including over 40 municipalities right here in Michigan. A municipal power system would allow Ann Arbor to invest in consistent, affordable, and green power to our residents and give us the ability to reduce greenhouse gas emissions - instead of paying dividends to DTE shareholders.
