The District Department of Transportation is planning to construct a pedestrian bridge from Kenilworth Park across the Anacostia River to the National Arboretum. This bridge will provide residents of Kenilworth, Eastland Gardens, Mayfair, Parkside and other neighborhoods direct access to the National Arboretum, and it will expand the Anacostia River Trail.
This bridge will bring much needed infrastructure to communities that for too long have not had adequate access to the amazing natural resource of the Anacostia River and its waterfront parks. Some constituents are worried that the bridge will conflict with boating use of the river, but we believe that the bridge can be designed to accommodate all uses, and that denying access to the river to the predominantly low-income, African American communities living nearby is an injustice.
DDOT is accepting comments about the bridge through June 21, 2019.
