Maryland’s waiving of a law to site the largest US incinerator less than a mile from 2 schools alarms environmental and children’s public health advocates


August 30th, Baltimore, MD - A settlement agreement entered into on July 23, 2010 by Maryland state agencies and Energy Answers, LLC will exempt the company’s giant incinerator project from complying with a state law [Md. Code Ann., Envir. § 9-204(k)(1)] that prohibits the construction of a municipal solid waste incinerator within 1 mile of any public or private elementary or secondary school.

Clean Water Action Criticizes House Policy Riders

Washington DC – Clean Water Action is appalled that the leadership of the US House of Representatives appears willing to shut down the federal government in order to win passage of budget riders limiting the authority of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and prohibiting funding for Planned Parenthood.

While recent press reports have indicated that the EPA restrictions may no longer be on the table, the House Republican leadership has brought the federal government close to the brink of shutdown over policy issues that should not be part of budget negotiations.

Today the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee voted to send Gina McCarthy’s nomination to be Administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to the full Senate for confirmation.
